Description

Down on the surface, Archangel ignited her winds and launched herself into the air.  As she approached, Tark began preparing the ship to jump after the Dragon’s signal.

“This is the Angel, hailing the Dispatcher.  I’m glad to see you all survived the attack on the embassy.  Hopefully you can shed some light on what happened on our way to the rendezvous point.”  There was a pause. “I see you’ve deployed communication jammers.”  Her voice was lower, guarded. “Care to explain why?”

Tark took the psi amplifier. [greetings Angel, this is commander Tark speaking.  We do not want any more information reaching the news broadcast.  Much has happened, and we would rather discuss it in private.]

Archangel hovered in front of the dispatcher, her visor glaring directly into the bridge. “Go on.” She commanded.

[As you know, the facility was attacked by what appeared to be Tel-Aoran special forces.  They were armed with Kiliaak weaponry.]

“The Kiliaak” Victoria gasped, “Are they involved?”

[It is possible.  As I said, the situation is more complex than it appears.] Tark opened a direct channel, and Victoria’s face appeared on a monitor.  [Toyozo Shoji and Kira Takala are with me.  I will let them tell the rest.]

Kira took the amplifier.  [Greetings.  While making our way to the mecha, we ran into an enemy squad who had taken Yb captive.  He had distracted them for long enough for us to escape before he did the same.]

                “Where is he now?”

Kira paused, but Yb picked up the microphone.  “I’m right here, Angel.  I can tell you what happened.”

Victoria blinked in surprise.  “Why is he on the ship?” She asked plainly.

“Let him explain, please,” Shoji begged, “It’s not what it looks like.”

“That’s good, because it looks like you are harboring the enemy right after they attacked us.”

Yb flinched, then Shoji continued, “He saved our lives, multible times.  If he were an enemy, he would have let the dragon or its pilot kill us!”

“The Dragon? The kaiju that attacked before.”

Yb took the mic back.  “That’s right, and it was the same kaiju that I saved you from.  You said you owed me a debt, so please just listen to me.”

Victoria looked conflicted, but she nodded. “Continue.”

“Some soldiers tried to take me with them, but I escaped into the vents and fell into the comms room.  There was a human female there in black armor.”  Yb’s breath caught as he thought of Tame again.  His chest hurt whenever he remembered her betrayal, but he continued.  “Her name is Yoshimura Tame, she saved my life during the last attack.  She said that they were capturing Vayl personnel and killing any Sol members.  When I asked her if she was with the Sol, she attacked me.  Kira and Shoji arrived then, and fought her until she fled.”  He nodded to Shoji, who took over.

“I had never seen armor like that.  She was fast, and stronger than anything I’ve ever seen.  After we started fighting her, she turned invisible and left. Then she summoned the kaiju from the embassy.  This time, it had a mechanical suit of armor just like hers, but the technology was clearly Sol.  It had the same antigravity gear and vibroblades.  Those specs are top secret, there’s no way the Vayl could have it.  It hasn’t even been a year since contact.”  He paused, trying to read the Angel’s face, but she was void of any expression.

Victoria, your heart rate is reaching dangerous levels, even for you. Talos said with concern.

She took a deep breath and clenched her fist.  Another Sol embassy has been attacked.  R’Ka took us by surprise with a  declaration of war, one of my brothers is held captive on an alien planet, and now the Kiliaak empire might be involved. She looked at Yb. We should take him with us.  Even if he doesn’t know anything, removing R’Tyra from the equation could help our situation immensely.

Letting him leave on one of our shops will do that too, without taking him prisoner. Talos reminded her. Even if he is an enemy, the forces on that ship could take care of him.

She raised an eyebrow, You think he is an enemy?

Talos scoffed, No.  If he were, he wouldn’t have saved our lives from the dragon the first time.  Even if it were a ploy to gain our trust, the chance to remove one of the Guardians is too great to pass up. I’m just reassuring you. Victoria looked conflicted, so he continued.  do you remember, during the first Kaiju Wars, the GDF locked you and your brother up after Apocalypse’s first landing.  If they had listened to you, many lives would have been saved. Would you risk making the same mistake?

Victoria sighed and looked at the dispatcher. “Pursue the signal,” she told them. “We can’t ignore the risk of the Empire’s return.”

Commander Tark reached for the psi amp, but was beaten to it by Kira. [What about Yb?]

“He is to stay with you. Find the Dragon and whoever she works for, and stop them.  After that… We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”   She looked directly at Yb. “Our people are at war now, child.  We are enemies.  I owe you my life, so I can offer you safe passage back to your people.  Hopefully, R’Ka will take this offer of peace in consideration, and release Leviathan.”

Yb balled his fists and straightened his back. “Thank you for your offer,” he said, “But I want to find the truth too.  We don’t know what’s waiting for us.” He glanced at his friends, “I want to be there to help if I can.”

For a split second, Victoria smiled.  “Very well, Yb.  Don’t make me regret this decision.”  She looked to commander Tark and said, “commander, you and your crew are dismissed. I will ensure that the Sol Alliance understands the situation.  Good luck, to all of you.”

What are we doing? Talos asked aloud.

“I want to take a closer look.  We have more experience with the Kiliaak than anyone alive.  Maybe we’ll see something the children missed.”

Victoria moved quickly through the halls, taking note of the marks on the wall from stray fire.  Much to her frustration, all of the security footage had been wiped, so there was little to go on.  She recognized the signs of Kiliaak weaponry; huge bullet holes in the walls, scorch marks from a soldier popping the heat sink too close to a wall, there was no denying that Kiliaak weapons were used.

But we already knew that from the pilot’s report. she thought to herself. Is there anything useful?

                [Hello, Victoria Davis.]

She whirled around at the sound, her hand already glowing with energy.  She froze when she saw Jorath Kla leaning casually against a wall.

[You missed all the excitement.  You must be so disappointed.]

“You’re supposed to be on Tel-Aora, Kla! What are you doing here?” She kept her hand up and ready. Something’s not right…

[I could ask you the same thing.  I didn’t expect to find you so easily.] He smiled and held up his hands.  [I guess today’s my lucky day.]  His clouded grey eyed turned piercing blue.

“You’re not Jorath Kla, who are you?” Victoria’s hand glowed white hot, “Answer me!”

He chuckled, [That’s the best part.  I am Jorath Kla, have been for quite some time,  But this is not the part where I tell you my life story.] He calmly raised his hand, and Victoria staggered.  [No, it’s the part where you go to sleep.]

She pointed her hand at Kla and fired a bolt of energy.  It struck his chest, burning his torso horrifically, but the ganshii didn’t even flinch.

He looked to his wounds with mild interest. [Look at that, you’re still conscious.] He clenched his outstretched hand and Victoria fell to the ground. As she faded into unconsciousness, she looked up at him. [If it makes you feel any better, the first one usually gets everyone.  I’m impressed.]  He looked at her unconscious form, and smiled.  He projected his thoughts to the stars.  Any operatives in the system, I have a pickup to make.  Lord Qu-Tashi is going to be very pleased with this…
