Description

In the following week, Joseph became an official member of the Global Defense Force. He spent most of his time in combat simulations and live training inside RagnRok. Under the supervision and study of GDF scientists, he drilled constantly. He displayed mastery with project RagnRok beyond the wildest dreams of the scientists. The Kiliaak had been lying low recently, and Joseph had been taking advantage of the short respite by training vigorously. The first time he faced them, he would have been killed if Gigantis hadn’t appeared. With determination, Joseph swore to himself that when the aliens started attacking again, he was going to be ready.
… … …
Aboard the S’krit-ni-Vahk, High commander Seil-Kha had halted the invasion. The presence of the kaiju that decimated their attack on Area 51 shocked the Kiliaak. Such power has never been seen, and it scared them. It was clear that Gigantis the Fire Monster was not one to be trifled with. Despite Kronos’ protests, Seil-Kha withdrew all forces until more was known about this mysterious, powerful kaiju.
… … …
One morning, as Joseph prepared himself for another day in training, he was met by Mr. Brooks. Recently, he seemed to have taken a particular interest in Joseph’s progress, and was always carefully watching his training exercises. Today, he was not alone. As he entered the mess hall where the pilots ate, he said “Good morning, Joseph. I have good news for you. Our engineers have finished the production of our latest mech. Project ArchAngel is now complete.”

“That’s great.” Joseph said, “Why are you telling me this?” Brooks was never the talkative type. He was calm and quiet, and didn’t talk without reason. Even when they were at Beerenberg, he was like that.

“Because we may have identified the reason for your success with RagnRok. All those centuries ago, when your ancestor saw Armageddon, he was the only one to have communicated with it. That brief moment of interaction gave him a connection with the kaiju, and with the earth itself. It would seem that this is hereditary. I, among other scientists, theorize that you are somehow able to interact with the mana in the earth, as Armageddon can. We call it Boren's syndrome, after the man who made the theory. This lends to your ability to connect with the mech. But I digress. This syndrome is, as I said, hereditary. It took us a little while to find her, but we did it. The pilot for this new mech will be none other than your sister, Victoria Davis.”

Joseph almost choked on his eggs. His sister stepped into view. She tucked her long, dark hair behind her ear, and smiled. “Well, hello to you too, Joe. You look like a real soldier now.”

Joseph opened his mouth to protest, looking at Brooks. Before he could speak, Victoria said “Don’t get mad at him. He just gave me the option. It was still my decision. Honestly, I know it’s dangerous, but how could you expect me to say no?”

Despite knowing the danger his younger sister would be in, Joseph smiled. “You always were the sci-fi nut,” he said, “fighting alien invaders in a giant robot must be a dream come true to you.”
That afternoon, Joseph was back to training. This time, however, he was led to a larger area than before. Of course, he was already jacked into RagnRok. There’s really only one way to move something that big. The field was larger than normal, and was a few miles across. Suddenly, he heard a voice over the comms. It was his sister.
“Hey, Joe! The boys in the lab want me training with you today.”
A massive mech stepped into view, its joints whirred softly as it walked. It was humanoid in form, and as it stood up, Joseph saw massive jets and a gleaming golden halo. This was the ArchAngel Mech that he had been told about.
… … …
Within the giant mech, Victoria was positively ecstatic. Like her brother, she showed remarkable skill with the machine. She felt power unlike anything she had experienced before. She wasn’t allowed to fly yet, there was lot of training to do before that. Regardless, she felt as though she was born to be here, inside the mech. Jacked into ArchAngel, she felt more alive than she ever had before.
… … …
One week after that, the Kiliaak returned. They attacked Chicago, the third most populated city in the United States. With their advanced surveillance systems, GDF officials were able to anticipate the attack. By the time the Kiliaak hit, a third of the city had been evacuated and RagnRok and ArchAngel were on their way.

Touching down just inside the city, Joseph and Victoria steeled themselves for their first real mission. Their job was to distract the attacking Kiliaak kaiju and allow the citizens time to evacuate to safety. The two split up, and selected their targets. The attacking force was mostly the same abominations that attacked Area 51.

Joseph let out a mechanical roar, and pounced on a Bull Hydra in front of him. Quickly killing it with an electrically charged bite, he looked up and locked on to 4 of the others. With a roar, four rockets fired from his reserves and struck the targets. A ways away, Victoria took to the air and flew towards the closest enemies. With a flick of her arm, her laser sword burst from her arm. Swinging with finesse, she sliced through a group of attacking harpies. In the same motion, she opened the palm of her left hand, and fired a laser from the emitter housed there. Her target exploded.

“Joseph! We need to get these monsters away from the city. Follow me!” Victoria said through the comm unit. She took off again, and began circling over the attacking force. Almost taunting them, she flew over their heads, and faster than the harpies could. Joseph did the same on the ground. He ran circles around the attackers. Suddenly, the pair veered off and left the city, followed closely by the Kiliaak abominations. Once safely beyond the city walls, they split up again, and took down the attackers. The pair moved like forces of nature, quickly dispatching all hostile targets. Taking a moment to catch their breath, Joseph looked to Victoria. In the ArchAngel mech, she looked to all the world like some kind of divine guardian. Her jets smoked, and the armor gleamed in the rising sun.
Suddenly a laser arced from the sky, nearly severing Joseph’s tail. Looking up, the two saw a Kiliaak ship hanging in the sky above. Without hesitation, Victoria took off, headed for the ship. “Wait!” Joseph yelled after her, “You can’t just charge into things like this!”
whether she didn’t hear, or was just ignoring him wasn’t clear. Either way, she flew upward to the ship. With a frustrated sigh, Joseph locked onto the ship and fired a full salvo of laser rockets at it. From the ground, Joseph could make out bright arcs of red light, where Victoria was swinging her sword. There was an explosion where RagnRok’s missiles struck. All Joseph could do was watch, and occasionally fire his mouth-laser at the far off vessel, as Victoria attacked.

High in the atmosphere, Victoria flew around, trying to find what to hit to disable the ship. Energy pumped through the robotic avatar like adrenaline as she soared through the sky. the power was almost intoxicating, and Victoria felt as though she could do anything. Flying back to the underside of the ship, Victoria saw something protruding from the vessel’s belly. With a mighty slash, she cut the protrusion off and backed up. The attack left a large hole in the bottom of the ship. Inside, she could see something pulsing with a bright purple light. Smiling to herself, she said, “when in doubt, fly inside and destroy the core.” She boosted her rockets and flew toward the strange light. She reached the core. It was some kind of sphere, glowing and crackling with the energy that powered the ship. On a strange impulse, she reached out with her left hand, and grabbed the core. The energy shot through her at the speed of light, and her mechanical body crackled with it. Fighting the flow of power, she raised her right hand above her head. She activated the device on her right wrist , and the sword sprang out. She struggled against the current, and began to channel it into the sword. As power poured into it, the sword burst out and grew with the power. It grew so long that it pierced the upper hull of the ship. Quickly, she swung the laser sword around, carving a fissure into the ship. With a final slash, she sliced the ship in half, and released her hold on the energy core. The energy surging through the mech began to overload the system.
Struggling to keep the mech online, Victoria fell. She managed to land without destroying the mech, and fell to her massive, robotic knees. Victoria felt consciousness slipping away from her as ArchAngel began to shut down.
“Oh man… Joe’s gonna really chew my ear off for this…”
… … …
Due to the heroics demonstrated by Joseph and Victoria Davis, the evacuation of Chicago was completed safely. The two survived, and their mechs were not very badly damaged. This was a great victory for humanity. Live videos of the encounter were taken by fleeing citizens, and circulated worldwide. The videos grew in popularity until it seemed as though the entire world had seen them. The siblings operating the mechs were nominated to receive a medal for valor each. The award ceremony is due to take place one week after the incident.

NAME: ArchAngel
HEIGHT: 80 meters
WEIGHT: 10,000 tons
FACTION: GDF

POWERS: ArchAngel holds several powerful abilities at the pilot’s disposal. Housed in the left palm is a powerful laser weapon that works for long ranged attacks. On the right forearm is a device that, when activated, creates a “sword” out of the energy inside the mech. With the massive jets on its shoulders, ArchAngel is able to fly at high speeds and move with great agility.

{guys, i think this may be the most fun I've had designing a character. ArchAngel was awesome to draw, and i think it came out great! i'm also happy with the story for this too. everyone loves a giant sword that cuts a small warship in half, right?}

So basically, nature itself created Boren's syndrome as a means of selecting its chosen, future protectors. Or at least, in regards to the human race. And now we have two of them, in the form of Joseph, and Victoria. And i can see the differences between the two: the key one being that Victoria's more reckless than Joseph, and tends to be prone to her own emotions. But she still manages to do good with Archangel - who looks pretty awesome as a mech, by the way. Either way, this was a good chapter, and a very excellent way to introduce Victoria. Kinda makes me feel bad knowing what's about to happen next.:(
