When he finally came to, Joseph felt himself strapped down to a chair. He thrashed against the restraints, then looked up to see Alex enter the room. “What the hell is going on?” Joseph yelled, “What am I doing here? Why did you-“
Brooks cut him off with a wave. “I’m sure you have questions, but first, we need to make sure we know exactly what happened back there.” He was remarkably calm, considering what they had seen at the mountain. “What happened after you fell?”
Joseph gave him a venomous glare, and it was a while before he spoke. Finally he sighed, and lifted his head. “I fell into this huge cavern, and landed on top of that creature. It gave me this…vision. I saw my ancestor.”
“Yes, the monk…”
Joseph gaped at him “How do you know about that?”
Brooks scoffed and rolled his eyes. “You think it was an accident you were transferred to the same mountain where your ancestor discovered the first kaiju in recorded history?”
Joseph glared at him, “Well if you know so much about it than why bring me into this?”
“Your ancestor’s account claimed the Kaiju spoke to him. Since this is only the second time on record its woken up we wanted to try and present it with a similar situation.”
Joseph’s eyes widened in fury “So you were planning on just throwing me into a pit with a giant monster because in theory I might calm him down? You people are insane!”
Brooks cut him off with a wave of his hand, “Were you harmed? No. So there is no point complaining about what could have happened. Now, you mentioned a vision. Did the creature say anything to you?”
“Something about me saving the Earth. ‘Me and another being vanguards or something’.”
Brooks looked away, confused. He started pacing across the room. Joseph squirmed again, still tied down to the table. “Why am I restrained anyway? I didn’t know the GDF took civilians captive.”
Brooks chuckled, “You probably don’t remember, but when we first brought you here you tried to fight your way out, knocked Agent Patel on his ass if I remember correctly.”
Joseph looked down embarrassed, “If I promise to be good will you unstrap me?”
Brooks thought for a minute, and then unstrapped him. Joseph stood and stretched his sore muscles. “Now, where am I?”
“You’re in a top secret military facility in the Arizona desert. All those rumors you heard about area 51 were true. We brought you here to find out more about this kaiju, whom we are now calling Armageddon. We think you and he might share a-“
Suddenly an explosion rocked the building. The sound of twisting metal filled the air, and an alarm started blaring, followed by a flashing light.
Brooks’ eyes widened in shock, and he drew his sidearm as he ran to the door. He looked back at Joseph “Come on! We have to get you out of here!” Joseph wobbled to his feet. The drug was still in his system, but Brooks wasn’t wasting anytime.
Joseph staggered after him, “What’s going on?”
“Kiliaak forces are attacking the base. They’re probably after the project.”
Joseph groaned, “Of all places you bring me to a strategic target? What project anyways?”
Brooks looked over his shoulder but kept moving, “None of your concern, keep movi-“ He was cut off as a blast of energy blew through the wall beside them. Brooks was thrown to his feet, as a large figure stepped through the hole. It had three eyes, and was wearing a full suit of armor. It was over ten feet tall, and wielding a very large gun. A Kiliaak ground soldier. The thing towered above him, and pointed his weapon at Joseph. He stood frozen in terror, when there was suddenly a loud cracking noise. The creature’s head burst as a round tore through its skull. It’s corpse fell to the ground to reveal Brooks, his gun still smoking.
“RUN GODDAMIT! MORE ARE COMING!” He picked up the aliens rifle and fired several shots through the whole. Joseph turned and ran.
After what seemed like hours of running in the dark, he came upon a long corridor. As he stepped inside, a heavy door closed behind him. There was a pulsing blue light that illuminated the room. All joseph saw was a large chair. With a heavy sigh of relief, he collapsed into the chair, consciousness slipping away.
With a jolt, something snapped up from behind and clasped over his head. It felt like a helmet. As Joseph weakly clawed at the thing, it tightened around his scalp like a vice. His vision swam as random points of light appeared and spun before his eyes.
Suddenly, he was standing again. His exhaustion had disappeared. As he tried to move, he felt something was off. Images flickered into view; displays with labels saying things like “shields” and “rockets,” like something out of a video game. He looked around; he was in some sort of huge hangar, with a large steel door about 100 yards in front of him. He felt impossibly high, and looked down. He gasped in shock, his vision swimming. It looked like his body had been replaced with a metal replica of the creature from the mountain. Suddenly, a female voice filled his head, cold and robotic.
“RagnRok power on. Identify pilot.”
A robot?! He was inside some massive GDF mech? Or was he a GDF mech? Joseph felt dizzy as he tried to wrap his mind around what was happening. The voice repeated itself, snapping Joseph back.
“uh…” he said “Joseph Davis?”
The VI said “Welcome, Joseph Davis. I am sensing multiple hostiles in the area. While this project is still in testing, it is fully operational. Hostiles entering the hangar, engaging combat protocols.”
There was a loud slam as something heavy smashed against the door. Joseph heard an enraged roar as more bodies began throwing themselves against the door. With a load groan the door was wrenched open, and the monsters forced their way inside. Some walked awkwardly on three legs, while others flew in the air, another dragged itself along with only one arm. As the Kiliaak abominations advanced, Joseph knew he had no choice but to face them. Raising his head, he let loose a primal yell that emerged from his metal mouth as a robotic roar, and he charged. Electric energy surged through his new, unfamiliar body.
As he charged towards the monstrosities he felt…right, as though this had always been what he was meant to do. Armageddon’s words echoed through his head.
[You will be one of the vanguards of Earth…]
NAME: Project RagnRok
HEIGHT: 55 Meters at shoulder
WEIGHT: 25,000 tons
FACTION: Global Defense Force
POWERS: RagnRok is the newest and most advanced mech made to date. it possesses several laser and electricity based weapons. from its mouth, it can fire a beam of electrical energy. The tanks on its shoulders fire salvos of "rockets" which are, in fact, clusters of energy that explode on contact. it can charge the metal surface of the body with electricity, giving a jolt to its bites and slashes. the mech is very fast. its piloting system allows the pilot to "become" the mech, giving it reaction time and agility unlike anything the GDF has made before.
[This is my brother (editor)'s favorite of all my kaiju. terribly sorry for the week delay, folks! to anyone confused about how the piloting works with this thing, just think of Avatar. when Jake Sully hooks into the big machine, he isn't "piloting" the avatar, he IS the avatar. same thing with the pilot of RagnRok. I really enjoy these mechs! more to come soon. Stay tuned!]
