Then and now: Leviathan

Description

Ah Leviathan, the one who started it all. Leviathan, or Levi, was the first (technically second but we’ll get to that later) kaiju Blabyloo ever thought of. The picture in the top left is the very first drawing, and as you can see it’s not even fully inked. Ironically Blabyloo hated Levi at first, and didn’t even bother to finish the picture. We aren’t sure what, but something about him stuck, and Blabyloo decided to give him another chance. This old version of Leviathan was actually the last living megalodon, mutated by the natural causes and enslaved by the green gem placed on his chest.

Design:
Out of all of our Kaiju Levi has changed the least. He was always at his core a shark with arms and legs. While at first he was much more primal looking, with 4 dorsal fins (reasons unknown) and shoulder spikes. The shoulder spikes stuck around for a bit, but eventually we decided that they weren’t all that aerodynamic, and we really couldn’t get him to look right. While at first the goal was to make him look scary (as an evil enslaved shark beast) :icongroudan383: convinced us that he should be a good guy (more on that in a bit). This presented us with the challenge of making a giant shark look like a hero, someone that you wouldn’t necessarily run away from in terror. We took away his more intimidating features, the spikes and the claws mainly, and removed the soul less black pits that shark have for eyes in exchange for more intelligent (albeit reptilian) eyes with pupils and iris. We also decided to place mind control gems on his hands and feet, to add more color to the design and give him a newer ability. Levi’s design has undergone the least redesigns, and with good reason, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Story:
This Levi was actually going to be a bad guy (gasp!) It was only an intervention by :icongroudan383: in which he suggested that we make Levi a good guy, mainly because “Bad guys always get killed”. Well this turned out to be the best idea :icongroudan383: ever gave us, because now Levi is our favorite hero of the bunch. We kept the idea of being enslaved by the Seatopians, giving him a reason for his current heroics, as he seeks to make up for his atrocities under the control of the Seatopians. We also changed his origin a little, as the whole “mutated through natural causes” thing is a bit lazy. We changed it so Levi was created during the bioengineering boom with the Atlanteans, the same boom that resulted in the Gyaos and Gamera. This actually provides a reason for his existence besides “Hur dur, mutations I guess.” Like with his design Leviathan’s character has changed the least out of any of our creations. He begins as a simple monster, only just learning to speak after freeing himself from Seatopian control, but he quickly matures into a real hero when the Kiliaak begin their invasion. Leviathan helped the GDF and the other Earth Defenders keep the Kiliaak at bay, returning time and time again to do battle with his arch nemesis Kronos. Kronos tried to capture Levi’s strength and will with his clone of sorts, Kraken. Levi both pities and fears this creation, as it has nearly killed him on multiple occasions, only to immediately save his life. Leviathan participated in the cataclysmic battle of London, and was gravely wounded by the creature known as Apocalypse. He was ultimately killed by Spacegodzilla, only to be brought back from the brink by the combined efforts of Armageddon and Gigantis. The deaths of so many to bring him back weighs heavily on Levi, and he has sworn to make sure their sacrifice was not in vain.

Powers:
Levi’s powers have always been pretty straight forward. He’s a fierce fighter, bringing the natural speed and ferocity that have allowed sharks to be the dominant predator in the sea for millions of years. The gem on his chest provides the more complicated part of his powers, at first we just had this thing firing a beam attack, but we decided we wanted it to do more. Now with the other four gems on his hands and feet it operates kind of similar to the Green Lantern’s powers, projecting energy fields that he can control with great effort. At first this was just simple shapes to enhance his attacks, like brass knuckles, but by the Battle of London he had learned to contort the energy fields into a sort of armor, greatly enhancing his offensive and defensive capabilities. Now don’t worry, he won’t be doing anything much more complicated than that, he isn’t a Green Lantern or anything.

Relationships:

Kronos: Kronos is Leviathan’s arch nemesis. Leviathan was the first encounter the Kiliaak had ever encountered to actually hold its own against a Kiliaak force, especially their Warlord himself. While Kronos bears a personal grudge against Levi for humiliating him, Levi has no such vendetta. As Steve Rogers put it “I don’t like bullies.” And neither does Levi. Levi will continue to fight against Kronos so long as he poses a threat against Earth. It is unknown how Levi will act towards him now that he has left the Kiliaak.

Talos: Levi may not know Talos’ physical form, but he remembers his voice. Fragments of Talos’ code were used to keep Levi under control, and Levi hasn’t forgotten it. Levi still bears a deep and personal grudge against Talos, for controlling him and for using him to inflict so much pain. It is unknown how Levi will react when he realizes that Talos is working with the Davis siblings.

Kraken: Levi isn’t quite sure how he feels about kraken. On one hand he’s an abomination, a clear and present threat to the Earth with a rather large body count. On the other hand, he came from Levi, and clearly cares about him as he has protected him from Kronos on multiple occasions. He can see that Kraken is hurting and confused, but he can’t just ignore the fact that Kraken is first and foremost a killing machine, and needs to be stopped.

Armageddon: Levi sees Armageddon as a mentor of sorts, an immensely powerful being who (like him) seeks to protect the earth. Armageddon acts as the Obiwan to Leviathans Luke Skywalker, an old hero passing the torch to the younger generation.

Gigantis: Leviathan fears and respects Gigantis, but mostly fears. While he owes Gigantis his life he hasn’t forgotten that it was him who killed millions just to save him. He also, like everyone else on earth, is afraid of Gigantis’ power, and knows that if it weren’t for the clear and present threat of Apocalypse that he would eventually fight against him to protect Humanity.

The Davis siblings: Levi sees them both as fellow defenders of earth. These three are the parallel to the three old guardians (Gigantis, Mothra, and Armageddon), the new generation. He believes them to be the best humanity has to offer, stating that “none can claim to be superior”. They will undoubtedly be working together in the fight against Apocalypse and his forces.

Trivia: Levi has made an appearence on shark week, though the interview didn't last long.
Blabyloo has drawn more action pictures of him than any other monster. He's fought with Kronos in equestria, done battle with Kronos in London, even fought Godzilla.
Leviathan still eats scrap metal, mostly from old cars he finds in scrapyards. This is to help with an iron deficiency.
This is by far blabyloo's favorite kaiju, hands down.

So there you have it, the journey of Leviathan, from conception to present. As I said not much has changed about him, but that’s with good reason. If you have any questions about our favorite Shark let me know and I’ll add the answer in an edit.

Up next: the Kiliaak warlord Kronos!
